Treatment Information:
Compassion Focus Therapy

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), developed by Paul Gilbert, recognises that we live in a highly competitive world where kindness is often overlooked, and self-criticism is common. This self-criticism can contribute to low self-worth, anxiety, depression, and other difficulties.

CFT explains how our brains are naturally wired to respond to threat, but also to warmth, care, and compassion. By developing compassion for ourselves and others, we can reduce feelings such as anger and shame while building resilience, confidence, and emotional well-being.

Our early life experiences play an important role in shaping our ability to be self-compassionate. Those raised in safe, nurturing environments may find this easier, while those who experienced neglect, trauma, or instability may struggle more and develop coping behaviours such as withdrawal, overworking, or self-harm. CFT emphasises that these responses are not your fault, but understandable reactions to past experiences.

This approach combines insights from evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, alongside mindfulness practices. Its aim is to help train the mind to respond with compassion, fostering greater positivity, stronger relationships, and improved mental health.
